Golfers Elbow Treatment
Golfer’s Elbow Treatment with Class IV Laser Therapy is a safe and conservative way to treat Golfer’s Elbow. Class IV High Power Laser Therapy can help to reduce pain, swelling, inflammation, fibrotic adhesions (scar tissue) and accelerates the rate of healing. Active Release Technique can help to lengthen the anterior muscles of the forearm which will reduce the stress placed on the medial epicondyle. Stretches should be given to the patient to do at home. Cryotherapy (icing) should be done 20 minutes on with 60 minutes off and done as often as possible. Ice massage can also be applied at 10 minutes on and 60 minutes off. Resting from the activities that are aggravating your condition is critical during treatment. Once the pain is starting to decrease gradual strengthening can be of benefit. When returning to activity a counter-force brace or “elbow strap” can be used to change the biomechanics of the tendon insertion to allow it to heel.
Golfer’s Elbow, or medial epicondylitis, is an inflammatory condition of the medial epicondyle of the elbow. Golfer’s elbow is on the medial side of the elbow while the more common Tennis Elbow is on the lateral side. With Golfer’s Elbow the muscles and tendons that insert upon the medial epicondyle become inflamed from overuse. This can happen from golf, baseball, climbing and other activities that involve the anterior forearm muscles. The anterior muscles of the arm help to flex the fingers and thumb as well as pronate or turn the wrist over. Pain is usually felt by the patient during active flexion of the wrist and pronation. Palpation of the medial epicondyle will elicit pain.
